What is Zaragata?
Zaragata is an expansion pack that talks. You put stickers on the cards of a game you already own, pick a rule set in the free app and play as usual. When someone plays a loaded card, a character reads its rule out loud to the whole table, and it is rarely good news for them.
What happens at the table?
You play your game exactly as you know it. When somebody plays a loaded card, they tap it on the phone and one of the characters reads its rule out loud: swap hands, draw ten, nobody may say a word until your next turn. A secret card stays unread until it is played, and a public one is there for everybody to see coming.
What do you need?
A game with cards in it, a pack of Zaragata stickers to put on those cards, and one phone with the app. One phone runs the whole game, so nobody else needs the app; friends who want to hold their own cards on their own phones join with it.
What does it cost?
The app is free, and so is every rule set in the library. A pack of 20 stickers is A$29.95 and loads one deck; it is on pre-order and ships in December 2026. Every account starts with 40 free cameos, which give the rules you write a character's voice.
Who is it for?
Friends who already play cards together and like it loud. Zaragata is for players 18 and over.
Which phones does it work on?
Android phones and iPhones: any recent phone that can pay by tapping can read the cards. The app is coming to Google Play and the App Store.
Who writes the rules?
People. The library has 702 house rules for 14 games, written by the people who play them, and anybody with an account can write their own rule set or send friends a link to write rules about each other.
Who reads them?
A cast of twenty-five characters, each with their own voice and their own way of putting things. The sweetest voices bring the worst news, and the villains hate it when they have to help.
What does the word mean?
Zaragata is a Portuguese word, also heard in Caribbean Spanish, for a noisy, laughing row: the kind a table of friends has over a card game. Say it za-ra-GAH-ta.
Who makes it?
Zaragata is made in Sydney, Australia. Write to [email protected] with anything at all.
