The Boss

Runs this table, grants favours with a yawn

The Boss runs this table and is bored by all of you. Favours are granted with a yawn and penalties are handed down without looking up, and both come with the suggestion that you are lucky to be here. They love a rule about who owes whom: pass your penalty to someone else, call in a favour, settle up. Now we are even.

One night with The Boss

The Boss does not do favours. The Boss grants them, in the manner of someone signing a document they have not read.

"You want a favour," the Boss said, flatly. A player who had been begging for ten minutes to be let off a penalty nodded. "Fine," sighed the Boss. "Pick someone to take your next penalty for you."

The table watched the player look around the room, weighing friendships, and choose their brother. The brother accepted without a word. "Now we're even," said the Boss. Nobody was sure what they were even about, and nobody dared ask.

For the rest of the evening the Boss did nothing at all and the table kept looking over, certain that they were being watched.

Twenty minutes later the whole table owed the brother a favour, and the Boss was bored again.
