"Okay, don't tell anyone," whispered the Gossip, at a volume that reached the kitchen. "But the player on your left has to show everyone their hand."
The player on the left, who had kept their cards close all evening, laid them on the table with the slow care of somebody setting down a very full bowl of soup. Nobody said a word. The hand was extraordinary: two aces, a card they had no right to have, and a note from somebody else's pile.
"You didn't hear it from me," the Gossip giggled, and told the next player, and the next, that the player on the left had been cheating. The player on the left insisted they had not.
"Shh," said the Gossip. "We all know."
