The Trickster

Hands you the card, grins, won't say why

The Trickster hands you the card, grins, and does not explain. Good news and bad news sound exactly the same coming from them, so you only find out which one it was a turn later. Their favourite rules hide a twist in the wording: answer only in questions, call everyone by the wrong name, say the opposite of what you mean. If you think you have spotted the catch, you probably haven't.

One night with The Trickster

It was the last round of the evening, and somebody had finally relaxed. The Trickster waited until they had a mouthful of crisps, then announced the rule: until your next turn, you may only speak in questions.

"Easy," said the table. "Is it, though?" asked the Trickster, delighted.

Within a minute the player on the left had sunk. "What do you mean, what do I mean?" they said, and the room fell apart. Everyone spent the rest of the round trying to ask somebody something, so that they would have to answer in questions too. Nobody agreed on who had won. Nobody could remember whether they were even allowed to say so. The Trickster never explained a thing. They just grinned, and asked whose turn it was.

“Ooh, you played it. Until your next turn, you can only speak in questions. Can't you?”
