"Listen here," said the Sheriff, in a voice like gravel in a bucket. "You're deputised."
The player blinked. Nobody had ever deputised them. "Anyone who talks over you sits out their next turn." The Sheriff added, through gritted teeth, "Don't let it go to your head."
It went straight to their head. Within a minute the new deputy had sat out two relatives, a friend and a neighbour who had only been trying to ask about the heating. The table appealed to the Sheriff, who said the law was the law and hated every word of it.
The deputy held a trial over a muffled cough and let the coughing player off with a warning. The Sheriff watched all of this and said nothing, which was the loudest thing in the room.
By the end the deputy had a badge made from a folded napkin, and the whole table was whispering.
