Game night ideas

The easiest way to make a game night more fun is to change one thing everybody expects: add a house rule, play in teams, or put a small trophy on the line. Pick games people already know, keep the rounds short and give the night a shape. These ideas suit adults at home, from four friends to a full house.

How do you make game night more fun?

Most game nights go flat for the same reasons: a game that takes an hour to explain, one player running away with it, and nothing anybody remembers the next day. Each of these fixes one.

What are good game night ideas without board games?

A deck of cards is enough for a whole night. Cheat and President need nothing but a standard deck, and boxed card games like Uno, Exploding Kittens and Monopoly Deal fit in a pocket and teach in a minute.

How do you host a games night for a big group?

Split the room rather than stretching one game. Two tables of five play faster than one of ten, and swapping a player between tables after each round mixes the crowd.

For everybody at once, play in teams. Codenames plays in two teams of any size, and Uno takes up to ten at one table.

What games are good for a couples game night?

For two couples, games where pairs can team up or turn on each other: Codenames as two teams of two, or Monopoly Deal and Exploding Kittens with four. For a night with just the two of you, Love Letter, Skip-Bo and Phase 10 all play well with two.

How do you keep a games night going every month?

Put it on the same night every month, so nobody has to organise it twice. Rotate who hosts and who picks the game, keep a running score across the year, and add a new house rule each time so the regular games never play the same way twice.

What house rules make any game night better?

The rules that get retold change how people behave at the table, not only the score. These come from rule sets for four different games in the library.

How does Zaragata fit a game night?

Zaragata puts the house rules on the cards. Stickers go on a deck you already own, one phone with the app runs the whole table, and a character reads each rule out loud as its card is played, so nobody has to remember them. It is for players 18 and over.

Zaragata stickers are on pre-order and ship in December 2026, and the app is coming to Google Play and the App Store. Until then, every house rule on this page works just as well agreed before the deal.
