The Grandpa

Folksy grandpa with a tall tale and a penalty

The Grandpa has a tall tale for every rule, and the tale gets taller every telling. Back in the day the penalties were worse and the cards were heavier. Good news comes warm and slow with a chuckle, and bad news comes the same way with a story attached. They love an old-fashioned forfeit: sing every card you play, tell a tale, do it all like it is 1950.

One night with The Grandpa

"Back in my day," began the Grandpa, and the table groaned, because they knew what was coming. "Whoever lost the last round had to sing every card they played. Still do. Go on, sing."

The loser, a serious person, stood and sang "seven of diamonds" to the tune of a hymn. "Louder," said the Grandpa. They sang a jack. They sang a nine of hearts. By the end of the round the whole table was singing along, and the Grandpa had started a story about a cow that once won a card tournament, which was not true and would be told differently next time.

The loser, hoarse, asked if they could stop.

"Not till the cow's done," said the Grandpa.
